Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Ateneo Lady Eagles opened their University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 78 women’s volleyball with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-14, rout of the NU Lady Bulldgos on Sunday (January 31) at The Arena in San Juan.
Ateneo had a sluggish start but managed to pull through in the first two sets.
It took the Lady Eagles two frames to display their championship pedigree as they pounced on the Lady Bulldogs in the third canto, 25-14.
“Iba yung mga kasama ko ngayon, hindi na yung mga veterans. Kasama ko na mga rookies ngayon. And I’m super proud of them, they played really well,” said Ateneo star Alyssa Valdez.
[Translation: “I’m with mostly rookies now. But I’m proud of them because they played really well.”]
Valdez led Ateneo with 18 points including 15 attacks.
This win extended the Blue Eagles’ winning streak to 19. Ateneo swept the tournament last year to win the title.
In the opening game, UP also made short work of the UE 25-20, 25-13, 25-21.
