Pacquiao vows to be ‘fists of the poor’ in the Senate

Manny Paquiao files his certificate of candidacy for Senator under the United Nationalist Alliance.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Saranggani Rep. Manny Pacquiao filed his certificate of candidacy on Friday (October 16) to formalize his Senate bid.

Pacquiao was accompanied by his wife, Jinkee, and his two sons.

He was also joined by former Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson.

“Asahan niyong pagsisilbihan ko kayo bilang kamao laban sa suliranin ng mahihirap,” Pacquiao said.

He explained that his Senate bid, under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), was his promise of a new hope to the masses.

Among his priorities if elected as senator are free public education until college and the protection of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and farmers.

Pacquiao cited poverty as a major reason why some youth are out of school, which he said was also his experience.

He added that he would want to help farmers by providing incentives for them and eliminating illegal smuggling, which is killing the local farming industry.

Pacquiao also touched upon the Bangsamoro Basic Law, asking if it would really be the way attain peace in Mindanao.

But he did not elaborate on his stance on the issue.

Finally, he also shared his plans to have the Philippines be known in sports through a development program in that field.

“Panahon na para ang Pilipinas ay kilalanin bilang isang puwersa sa sports,” he said.
