Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — After losing their fixture against the Philippines, Bahrain got their revenge over the Philippine Azkals, 2-0, on their home turf in their World Cup Qualifying fixture on Wednesday (October 14) at the Bahrain National Stadium in Riffa, Bahrain.
Coming off an encouraging 0-0 draw against North Korea, the Philippines started the first half as the brighter of the two sides.
Phil Younghusband had chances in both the early and late parts of the first half, but failed to convert either.
In the second half, it was Bahrain who looked like the more settled of the two sides and their advantage showed after they finally broke the deadlock to make it 1-0 in the 53rd minute.
Bahrain continued to make their momentum pay off, after taking advantage of a free kick in a dangerous area and whipping a blistering shot past Neil Etheridge to make it 2-0 in the 60th minute.
The Azkals threw everything forward, but the Bahrain defense remained strong as they rode off the storm.
This defeat sees the Philippines concede their second loss in their World Cup Qualifying group, making it increasingly difficult for them to qualify for the next round.
The Azkals will look to get a more positive result against Yemen on November 12 in the Philippines.
