Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — A team of Disney researchers wants to take the spotlight from digital devices and share it with the art of coloring books by bringing coloring books to life through augmented reality.
Disney Research has developed an augmented reality coloring book app wherein children can see both their artworks in a printed coloring book and see it come to life in real time through a mobile device.
This aims to create a sense of connection between the artist and the character and to motivate people to dabble more into the art.
The drawing is detected and tracked based on its coordinates, and the video stream is augmented with an animated 3D version of the character that is textured according to the child’s coloring.
This is made possible by using real-time texture synthesis and deformable surface tracking.
A Disney team based in Zurich presented this at the IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality last September 29.
