Albay to increase public awareness on newborn screening program

Legazpi City (CNN Philippines) — The Provincial Health Office of Albay and the Department of Health Bicol will spearhead a fun run to increase awareness on the Newborn Screening (NBS) program.

The activity, dubbed “Save Babies through Newborn Screening,” is set for October 17.

On Tuesday (September 29), stakeholders finalized the details of the upcoming event, which will be held simultaneously with Albay, Masbate, Camarines Norte, and Camarines Sur.

In Albay, the 5-kilometer fun run will start 5 a.m.

Once participants finish the fun run, a talk and presentation about the importance of newborn screening will be conducted.

Dr. Nathaniel Rempillo, provincial health officer, said the event is highly significant as public awareness of the importance of NBS will help the early identification of infants affected by certain genetic or metabolic infectious conditions, thus enabling timely intervention.
