What did the generation before you tell you about martial law?

(CNN Philippines) — On September 21, 1972, the late President Ferdinand Marcos signed Proclamation No. 1081 which placed the Philippines under martial law.

The 1935 Constitution was suspended, Congress was dissolved and Marcos assumed absolute power in the country.

During that time, the president’s political opponents were arrested and media and establishments were shut down, and human rights abuses were a main concern of many Filipinos.

It was formally lifted on January 17, 1981.
