Phivolcs lowers Mayon alert level

In its bulletin last Wednesday (September 2), Phivolcs said Mayon had been put under Alert Level 1 as there was no imminent magmatic eruption.

Legazpi City (CNN Philippines) — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) lowered the alert level of Mount Mayon on Thursday (September 3).

In its latest bulletin on Wednesday (September 2), Phivolcs said that the volcano had been put under Alert Level 1, meaning that there was no imminent magmatic eruption.

Resident volcanologist Ed Laguerta said the decision to lower the alert level over Mayon was based on the downtrend of its major parameters, such as the number of volcanic quakes as in the past weeks they had only recorded one or even none each day.

Laguerta added that the sulfur dioxide emission of the volcano had returned to normal level, or about 500 tons per day.

Based on Phivolcs’ latest ground deformation survey, Laguerta said that the volcano was no longer inflated.

However, despite lowering the alert level, Phivolcs said that Mayon remained in an abnormal status, so the public is still strongly advised not to enter the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone.
