Police junk illegal drugs angle in murder of MMA fighter

Ale Brashary Cale was a former flyweight champion of the Pacific Xtreme Combat.

Davao City (CNN Philippines) — The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) is continuing its investigation of the murder of former Pacific Xtreme Combat flyweight champion Ale Brashary Cale Sunday (August 16).

Senior Insp. Milgrace Driz, DCPO spokesperson, said investigators had already ruled out the possibility that the murder had something to do with the illegal drugs trade, since they had established that the victim was not involved in it.

Driz added they would now look into the personal grudge and love triangle angles. She, however, refused to give details of the investigation.

The 24-year-old Cale, a resident of Trading Boulevard, was shot dead by motorcycle-riding gunmen in Ulas around 10:45 a.m. Sunday. He had four gunshot wounds in the head.

Initial investigation showed that the victim alighted from a gray Honda Fit car (with temporary plate number 122608) when an unidentified assailant suddenly approached from behind and shot him several times.

The assailant then fled aboard a motorcycle driven by another man, heading south. Police recovered three empty shells from the crime scene.

Cale was reportedly buried on the same day he was killed as part of the Muslim tradition.
