Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Five firms are expected to submit on Monday (August 17) qualification documents for the development and the operations and maintenance of five regional airports.
The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) made the announcement in a statement issued on Sunday (August 16).
The five firms that expressed interest in the projects are:
GMR-Megawide
Metro-Pacific-JG Summit Consortium
Aboitiz Equity Ventures
San Miguel Corp.
Philippine Skylanders Inc.
Union Equities
The Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) projects will be bid out in two bundles:
Bundle 1:
Bacolod-Silay Airport, P20.26 billion
Iloilo Airport, P30.40 billion
Bundle 2:
Davao Airport, P40.57 billion
Laguindingan Airport, P14.62 billion
New Bohol Airport, P2.34 billion
The winning concessionaires for each bundle will handle the operations and maintenance of the airports for 30 years, the DOTC said.
The will also undertake expansion of facilities, because most of these airports are operating beyond capacity.
The improvements, the DOTC added, would be needed to impove passenger safety and convenience and to ensure more efficient operations.
The opening of bids is scheduled for January 2016, while the awarding will follow in February.
Bacolod-Silay Airport
According to the DOTC, the Bacolod-Silay Airport began operating in 2008, replacing the Bacolod City Domestic Airpor.
It services residents of Negros Island and currently accounts for about 22% of air passenger traffic in Western Visayas.
The project covers the expansion of the passenger terminal building, which will boost its capacity to about 3.1 million passengers annually.
Iloilo Airport
The Iloilo Airport is already among the top five airports in the country, with the highest passenger traffic, the DOTC said.
Its expansion — which include the car park, as well as the construction of a full parallel taxiway — allow it to accommodate up to 4.5 million passengers annually.
Davao Airport
The Francisco Bangoy (Davao) Airport is the third busiest airport in the country.
According to the DOTC, it’s vital to expand the current passenger terminal building by up to 125,000 square meters, which will increase the airport’s annual passenger capacity to 6.7 million.
Laguindingan Airport
The expansion of the Laguindingan Airport, which is the main gateway to Northern Mindanao, will boost its annual passenger capacity to 4.3 million.
The winning concessionaire will take charge of installing airport equipment at par with international standards.
New Bohol (Panglao) Airport
The New Bohol (Panglao) Airport will replace the existing terminal in Tagbilaran City, which is the 11th busiest airport in the country. Despite its size of 850 square meters, the airport serviced around 789,800 passengers in 2013.
The new, eco-friendly airport is currently being constructed by winning bidder Mitsubishi-Chiyoda Joint Venture and should to be completed in 2017.
It can accommodate up to 1.7 million passengers annually.
