Prices of vegetables increase in several markets

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Prices of most vegetables from Baguio such as carrots, cabbage, pechay, and chayote, have gone up.

These were noticeable in two big Quezon City markets — Balintawak and Mega-Q Mart.

Prices of cabbage, pechay, and chayote have doubled since last week, while carrots increased by at least P10 per kilogram.

Worse, most of the upland produce are in bad shape, forcing shoppers to consume less greens and more meat.

The Agriculture Department said that sustained strong rains for two weeks in July damaged crops in Benguet, Ifugao and Mountain Province.

“If you recall (in) July may 2 weeks na magkasunod na bagyo. More than 2 weeks na ulan yun e. Bali yung supply natin mga tanim na leafy. Lahat dun nag-early harvest at saka yung iba nasira dun,” said, Reuben Dulagan, OIC of Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division-CAR.

Dulagan added that spoilage has affected vegetable supply.

The department is hoping vegetable farms will recover in two weeks because of improving weather conditions in the North.
