Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — It’s May 4, a good day to shamelessly geek out for Star Wars fans.
The “Star Wars Day” or “May the 4th Be With You” celebrates every May 4 the Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas.
The line “May the Force be with you” is a symbol of the Star Wars legacy and has gained cult status. General Dodonna said it after explaining the Death Star attack plan to the Rebel pilots. Han Solo said it again to Luke, right before the attack on the Death Star battle station.
Contrary to common belief, Star Wars fans were not the first one to use the line “May the Fourth Be With You.” One of the earliest known records of “May the Fourth Be With You” was when British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was elected on May 4, 1979, her team celebrated their victory via a newspaper advertisement that read: “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations.”
Regardless of how it started, Star Wars fans owned the line like it was their own.

Fans are celebrating it by sharing their personal Star Wars-related photos, as many Filipino netizens are doing — sending the “May the 4th” up to Twitter’s top trending list, both locally and worldwide.
The official Star Wars website suggested fans to celebrate this day by simply having a Star Wars marathon — dressing up with either your favorite Star Wars printed tee or a full-on Stormtrooper gear is highly encouraged.
