Fire guts iconic Savory resto on Escolta

It took firemen from various cities almost three hours to contain the blaze that struck the Original Savory restaurant in Escolta, Manila.

(CNN Philippines) – A three-hour fire hit one of the oldest dining places in Manila late Thursday morning (April 23), engulfing The Original Savory restaurant along Escolta Streeet in Binondo.

Initial reports said the fire started at the 65-year-old restaurant at around 11:02 a.m. and quickly spread to nearby establishments by the time it reached Task Force Bravo at 12:39 p.m. The building that houses the famous eatery was under renovation when the fire happened.

It took firemen from various cities almost three hours to contain the blaze before it was eventually declared fire-out at 1:58 p.m.

No one was reported hurt in the fire, the cause of which remains unclear as of posting time.

The Escolta branch located at the foot of Jones Bridge in Binondo became iconic for being the first Savory restaurant in the country. It started out as a panciteria in 1950 until its owners decided to expand its menu which includes the ever-popular Savory fried chicken.
