Metro Manila, Philippines — Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo missed a podium finish in the all-around final of the men's artistic gymnastics at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Yulo scored a total of 83.032 points to place 12th out of 24 in the all-around final held at the Bercy Arena on early Thursday morning, Aug. 1 (Manila time).

Japan's Oka Shinnosuke won the gold medal with his 86.832 total score, followed by China's Zhang Boheng (86.599) and Xiao Ruoteng (86.364) who netted the silver and bronze medals.

Yulo's overall performance was stained with a fall on the pommel horse. His smooth moves on the apparatus began to lose momentum on his way to his dismount and consequently fell on his back. He got up and repeated the routine to finish with 11.9 points.

Initially at the last spot, the 24-year-old Manila native regrouped and climbed the ranks as he tallied 13.933 in still rings, 14.766 in vault, 14.5 in parallel bars, 13.6 in horizontal bars, and 14.333 in floor exercise.

Yulo's strong showing in the vault apparatus got the second highest score, tied with Japanese gymnast Hashimoto Daiki who ranked 6th in the all-around final.

This was still an improved outcome from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics where he failed to qualify for the all-around final as he ranked 47th out of 62 starters.

The Filipino athlete will still vie for a gold medal through the final rounds in the floor exercise on Saturday and vault on Sunday.
