Metro Manila, Philippines — Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are in for a treat, or not, as actor Robert Downey Jr. will return to the film franchise.

But it will not be as Iron Man. Downey is set to portray Victor von Doom a.k.a. Doctor Doom, the supervillain in the Fantastic Four series.

“New mask, same task,” the American actor said as Marvel Studios announced the surprise at the San Diego Comic Con this week.

Marvel Studios also announced the return of Joe and Anthony Russo to direct “Avengers: Doomsday,” starring RDJ, as well as the “Avengers: Secret Wars.”

The films are slated for theatrical release in May 2026 and May 2027, respectively.

Downey, one of the highest-grossing actors of all time, first played Tony Stark and his superhero persona Iron Man in 2008.

The character had an emotional exit in the MCU in the 2019 film “Avengers: Endgame.”
